After years of fielding a lineup filled with studs, the Texas Rangers now finally have the pitchers that complement their hitters, and it's paying off with a white-hot 30-5 start to the season.
Some of the names in the lineup are familiar. The rejuvenation of Josh Hamilton continues, and he is hitting in the three-hole for the most potent lineup in the major leagues. First basemen Chris Davis is mashing the ball, belting 12 homeruns and pushing 36 men across the plate. Justin Smoak has continued to hit major league pitching well, batting over .300. And firecracker shortstop Elvis Andrus and smooth-hitting left fielder Julio Borbon are setting the table at the top of the order for all the big guns.
But, the real story in Ranger-land is pitching. Led by young flamethrower Neftali Feliz, the Rangers are in the top three in every major pitching category on the year except for strikeouts. After lighting the league on fire last year as a rookie, Feliz hasn't missed a beat, going 4-1 in eight starts with a 2.98 earned run average. Matt Harrison has also been sturdy for the Rangers, going 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA in seven starts.
However, the high-flying offense doesn't even need the ERA's to be that low. The other three starters in the rotation -- Pedro Strop, Derek Holland and Scott Feldman -- have a combined 11-1 record, even with an average ERA of 4.52.
The bullpen has also been lights out for the Rangers this year, as they sport a cumulative 2.97 ERA, tops in the American League.
With a 30-5 record, a 14 game lead in the American League West, the top bullpen, top lineup and one of the top rotations in the league, it's hard to find something wrong with the Rangers, but like any other team, injuries are always a concern, and they were just bitten yesterday when Hamilton, the major league leader in RBI's with 44, went down with a separated shoulder. Texas doctors expect him to miss nearly two months with the ailment.
Things are only looking to get better, also, as Cuban defectee Aroldis Chapman is on the horizon as the Rangers 25 million dollar man. Chapman is burning through the Texas League (AA) right now, with a 4-3 record in eight starts and a 3.18 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched.
Barring a bad case of the injury bug, or a sudden swoon in the bats, the Texas Rangers look to be the real deal, and the team to beat a quarter through the 2010 iMLB season.
